What is hand therapy?
Hand therapy is a specialized form of therapy aimed at treating conditions, injuries and functional disorders that affect the fingers, hands, wrists or arms. A hand therapist creates individual treatment plans tailored to the specific needs and goals of patients and coordinates with physicians as necessary. Sometimes there are clear protocols that must be followed, but every complaint is different. The overall picture will therefore always be examined individually to determine the best treatment.
Measuring instruments are used where necessary during the treatments. The progress of the treatment can be monitored using these measuring instruments.
Treatment can consist of: splint therapy, exercise therapy, advice on aids, wound care, scar treatment, mirror therapy, taking measurements and edema therapy.
The first three mentioned are the most common parts. These are further explained below.
Spalk therapy
Splint therapy is an essential part of hand therapy and can be used for various purposes. Consider stabilizing joints, improving hand mobility or posture and also promoting healing after injury or surgery.
As an experienced hand therapist, I specialize in designing and fitting custom splints to improve the function and mobility of your hand. The big advantage of splint material compared to plaster is that it can always be adjusted and can get wet.
There are also many standard braces and special gloves available so that there is plenty of choice in what suits you best.

Exercise therapy
In many cases, exercise therapy is an important part of recovery. Through targeted exercises and mobilization techniques I help you improve strength, flexibility, coordination and/or mobility in the hands. I will guide you step by step to ensure you use the right techniques and achieve your goals.
Tools
Assistive devices play an important role in promoting recovery and improving the functionality of your hands. This allows you to function independently for longer and more easily. As a hand therapist, I offer advice on the use of various aids that make your hand function easier to perform an activity. These can be, for example, kitchen, household or writing aids.
Various of these aids are available at Handtherapie Mulder. Please feel free to contact us to view and try out resources.
